Once upon a time a man appeared in a village and announced to the villagers that he would buy monkeys for $10 each.
The villagers, seeing that there were many monkeys around, went out to the forest and started catching them. The man bought thousands at $10 and, as supply started to diminish, the villagers stopped their effort.
He next announced that he would now buy monkeys at $20 each. This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys again.
Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going back to their farms. The offer increased to $25 each and the supply of monkeys became so scarce it was an effort to even find a monkey, let alone catch it!
The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at $50 each! However, since he had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would buy on his behalf.
In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers: “Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that the man has already collected. I will sell them to you at $35 and when the man returns from the city, you can sell them to him for $50 each.”
The villagers rounded up all their savings and bought all the monkeys for 700 billion dollars.
They never saw the man or his assistant again, only lots and lots of monkeys.

“C’era una volta un uomo che apparve in un villaggio annunciando a tutti gli abitanti che avrebbe acquistato scimmie per 10 dollari ciascuna.
Visto che c’erano molte scimmie attorno, la gente uscì nella foresta e diede inizio alla loro cattura. L’uomo ne acquistò migliaia per 10 dollari e, quando la disponibilità di animali iniziò a diminuire, gli abitanti del villaggio interruppero il loro sforzo.
Allora l’uomo annunciò che avrebbe acquistato le scimmie a 20 dollari l’una. Questo rinnovò gli sforzi degli abitanti che ripresero la cattura delle scimmie. Presto, però, la presenza di scimmie diminuì ancora di più, e la gente iniziò a tornare alle proprie fattorie.
L’offerta fu allora aumentata a 25 dollari, ma la fornitura di scimmie era diventata così scarsa che fu uno sforzo trovare anche una sola scimmia, figurarsi poi catturarla!
L’uomo diede allora annuncio che avrebbe comprato le scimmie a 50 dollari ciascuna! Tuttavia, poiché egli doveva recarsi in città per alcuni affari, il suo assistente avrebbe fatto gli acquisti a suo nome.
In assenza dell’uomo, l’assistente disse agli abitanti del villaggio: “Guardate tutte le scimmie che l’uomo ha già raccolto, rinchiuse in questa grande gabbia. Io ve le rivendo a 35 dollari l’una, e quando l’uomo ritorna dalla città, voi gliele rivendete per 50.”
La gente del villaggio riunì tutti i propri risparmi ed acquistò tutte le scimmie per 700 miliardi di dollari.
Non rividero mai più l’uomo né l’assistente, solo mucchi e mucchi di scimmie.
